I recently purchased the LG GU230 phone from Amazon LG GU230) to replace a Blackberry Perl purchased from an Amazon vendor (The Perl's Bluetooth, purchased May 3, 2010 BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220, went south and it continually rebooted at the most inconvenient times***).
The GU230 has all the features I wanted: An unlocked GSM phone with camera, slide or flip, mp3 ringtones, microSD slot, etc. It arrived on Thursday, 14 September 2011, and I got right into configuring my new phone and manually transferring my phone numbers from the my SIM. Several problems occurred, which involved LG and T-Mobile support plus intuitive trial and error. These are the problems:
1. The microSD is limited to 2GB, so the 8GB card from my Blackberry Pearl had to be replaced. There is NO mention of the memory limitation in the Amazon write-up.
2. The GU230 almost immediately blocked out my SIM PIN, and required entering the SIM PUK code (required T-Mobile involvement) every time the unit powered up. Following the SIM PUK code entry, the GU230 requested me to to change my SIM PIN, which did not have an opt-out and did not matter anyway.
3. The GU230 would lose connection with the microSD card, requiring me to shutdown, reseat the microSD card and then repeat #3. This loss of microSD connectivity happened no less than five times and three days.
On the plus side, the original order arrive well packaged and one day early. Documentation is weak, but there is an excellent PC app for managing your GU230 and the internal microSD RAM. The LG230 appeared to have scrambled my SIM PIN with its SIM block/PUK code entry nonsense - BUT T-Mobile was able to help me reset the SIM to its original PIN using my old Blackberry (This is done by intentionally locking out the SIM PIN, entering the PUK code, and then re-entering the SIM PIN on a working phone).
***One would think a well-cared for sub-200 dollar Blackberry phone might last more than a year and four months.
UPDATE: 18 September 2011
I found exactly the same LG GU230 phone from Amazon under a different ASIN number: LG GU230. Amazon requested I call them to resolve the issue with the original order. The service representative was not sure why Amazon had two different ASIN numbers (but I'll leave that for Amazon to resolve).
I have nothing but a positive 5 stars regarding Amazon customer service. They are shipping me a replacement LG GU230 phone using one-day shipping at no cost. I will update the rating on this phone as soon as I can evaluate and advise whether or not the first phone is a fluke.
